Immerse yourself in 300,000 years of Chellois history, from prehistory to the splendors of medieval times, in a new, modern 880 m² showcase.
Discover unique collections, including Queen Bathilde's prestigious room of Merovingian textiles, the largest in Europe. With its immersive scenography and educational trail, the museum offers a fascinating cultural experience for all ages.
The museum features local collections from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages, with carved flints over 300,000 years old, Neolithic and Gallic artefacts, as well as rare items such as a wooden lock from the early Middle Ages and sculptures from the abbey. Sarcophagi, coins, ornaments and architectural elements complete the historical tour.
Among the highlights is an exceptional collection of Merovingian clothing belonging to Queen Bathilde, wife of Clovis II, and Abbess Bertille, founders of the monastery.
Among this exceptional collection of fabrics dating from the 5th to the 15th centuries, several are classified as Historic Monuments:
- Saint Bathilde's chasuble (5th century), the centerpiece of the exhibition
- Leather shoes
Some pieces, such as the great coat, are still being restored, and will be represented by reproductions or photographs during the restoration work. The importance of restoration work and the museum's conservation mission will be highlighted in the inaugural temporary exhibition, offering a unique insight behind the scenes of heritage preservation.
